Our Audience
The Spy has built a loyal and discerning readership across Maryland’s Mid-Shore region, with a focus on Talbot, Kent, Dorchester, and Queen Anne’s counties. Our audience is deeply engaged in the civic, cultural, and social life of the Eastern Shore. They turn to the Spy for thoughtful reporting on public affairs, the arts, and community voices that shape local conversations.
Our readers are highly educated, civically active, and invested in the future of their communities. They include local leaders, professionals, retirees, and younger residents seeking a deeper understanding of the place they call home. Many are longtime Eastern Shore residents, while others are recent arrivals drawn to the region’s natural beauty and vibrant small-town life. What unites them is a shared interest in high-quality, independent journalism that both informs and connects.
Because the Spy prioritizes context, storytelling, and analysis over breaking headlines, our readers spend meaningful time with our content. They seek substance, not just sound bites, and are drawn to coverage that links local issues to larger regional and national themes. This makes the Spy an especially trusted source for those who want to go beyond the surface.
We know this about our readers because they tell us—through surveys, letters to the editor, and steady donations that support our work. Their consistent engagement with long-form articles, interviews, and cultural coverage reinforces what our data shows: the Spy attracts an audience that values depth, reflection, and connection.
The result is an audience that doesn’t just skim the news—they rely on it. Spy readers are decision-makers, cultural supporters, and community participants. For partners, this means a chance to reach an engaged, thoughtful, and influential segment of the Eastern Shore population.

Sponsorship and Underwriting
Support for the Spy Newspapers comes from local businesses, nonprofits, and community institutions that choose to underwrite our work. These acknowledgements are not traditional advertisements; they are presented in a straightforward, value-neutral way that emphasizes the sponsor’s name, services, or mission. Underwriting is framed as support for independent journalism on the Mid-Shore, aligning sponsors with our mission rather than selling space in the usual commercial sense.
The Spy has also maintained a long-standing policy of not sharing readership data or engagement metrics with sponsors. We are not in the business of trafficking audience data. Instead, we rely on underwriters who understand the value of supporting thoughtful, independent journalism and who recognize the unique trust our readers place in the Spy.

Spy Substack Sponsors
In addition to our websites, we have launched two Spy-related Substack sites. The first, the Cambridge Spy, which began in September, now has 425 daily subscribers. It is dedicated to highlighting the best Dorchester County content of its parent website, allowing some of our best articles to reach a wider audience. The second, The Spy Journal, published the Spy’s most compelling content from all four publications.

Strategic Partnerships
Since 2009, Spy Strategic Partnerships has built a wide network of partnerships with institutions across the Mid-Shore to expand the reach and impact of our journalism. These collaborations connect the newsroom to organizations shaping education, culture, health, and community life in our region. Working together, we develop original programming and content that not only informs but also strengthens the civic fabric of the Eastern Shore.
Partnerships have included the Academy Art Museum, where we highlight exhibitions and bring the arts into broader community conversations; Chesapeake College, where students and faculty contribute to coverage that bridges campus and community; Londonderry on the Tred Avon, with a focus on intergenerational dialogue and the experiences of older adults; and the Qlarant Foundation, where health-focused reporting links readers to resources and showcases nonprofit innovation. Our work with Shore Regional Health and Choptank Health has deepened community understanding of local health care issues. At the same time, collaboration with the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum has connected audiences to the region’s maritime history and traditions.
In addition to these relationships, the Spy works with more than 30 nonprofit and business organizations every year. Together, we create education-based programming, community forums, interviews, and special features that appear across all four Spy newspapers. These partnerships extend the reach of our journalism while giving institutions a trusted platform to share their stories and engage directly with a thoughtful regional audience.
Spy Podcasts
The Spy Podcast Projects has developed a growing lineup of podcast programming that extends the reach of our journalism far beyond the Mid-Shore. These projects deliver the same mix of insight and conversation our readers expect, but in a format that enables deeper dialogue and wider distribution.
From & Fuller features political professionals Al From and Craig Fuller, both of whom built national careers advising presidents and shaping party strategy. Their conversations bring Washington-level experience to bear on current events, connecting local audiences with the national currents that influence policy and politics.
Another flagship is The Maryland Caucus with Len Foxwell and Clayton Mitchell, where two of the state’s most seasoned political strategists unpack issues at the intersection of government, law, and public policy. The show regularly tackles statewide and national topics, drawing an audience that stretches well beyond the Eastern Shore.
Together, these podcast projects showcase the Spy’s ability to convene thoughtful voices and create content that resonates with local, state, and national audiences. They demonstrate how the Spy is not only a regional news source but also a platform for conversations that matter across Maryland and beyond.
